Multilingual Programs in New Mexico Interactive Map
We created this map for New Mexican families and community members looking for bilingual and multilingual school programs. You can use the filters to search for programs by grade, language, county, and immersion model. We are still in the process of adding more programs, so the current map does not contain an exhaustive list of all multilingual schools in New Mexico.
Glossary of terms:
Many of the schools we have added are based on the Bilingual Multicultural Educational Programs (BMEP) models and use these terms for the level of immersion. You can filter by these 5 terms as defined here:
BMEP Descriptions (Adapted from BMEP Manual):
- Dual Language Immersion (DLI): Designed for students to develop full proficiency academically and cross-culturally in English and a second language. A minimum of 50% of school instruction is conducted in the non-English language.
- Enrichment: Designed for students to develop the language they already speak at home, alongside English. Includes a minimum of one hour of language arts instruction in the students’ home language, with the possibility of two additional instruction hours in the students’ home language for a different content area.
- Heritage: Designed to support and revitalize a student’s heritage language and culture through oral and written communication. This program serves students at all levels of language proficiency, whether they already speak their heritage language or have no experience with it.
- Maintenance: Designed to develop and maintain proficiency and literacy in the home language while developing a student’s literacy and oral skills in English. This program is designed for English Language Learners. This includes one hour of language arts instruction in the home language and one hour of ESL instruction.
- Transitional: Designed to develop skills in the home language and culture while developing continued skills and proficiency in English. This program prepares students who are not yet proficient in English to successfully transition into an English general education program.
